My Story – Dr Ayanangshu Nayak
Hello, I’m Dr. Ayanangshu (Ayan) Nayak, and I am excited to join the Asian Pain Academy faculty. My journey as a psychiatrist has spanned the UK and India, with my practice focusing on General Hospital, Liaison, and Gender Psychiatry, as well as the psychiatric aspects of chronic pain management.
I graduated from Burdwan Medical College and went on to pursue higher training and specialist certifications in the UK, including MRCPsych and Consultant Certification in General Adult Psychiatry with a specialization in Liaison Psychiatry. My interest in addressing complex psychiatric presentations led me to focus on medically unexplained symptoms, psychological responses to chronic physical illnesses, perinatal psychiatry, and gender medicine. During my time at prestigious institutions like Northern General Hospital and Torbay Hospital, I developed clinical leadership skills while supporting patients facing unique psychological challenges in hospital settings.
A significant part of my career was spent at the Porterbrook Clinic in Sheffield, where I had the privilege of working as a recognized Gender Specialist under the UK’s HM Tribunals and Courts Service. This role allowed me to support gender-diverse individuals through sensitive and effective psychiatric care. Additionally, my clinical interests include working with patients who experience chronic pain, HIV, cancer, spinal injuries, and other long-term conditions that profoundly affect their mental well-being.
I’m particularly passionate about teaching and mentoring the next generation of psychiatrists and pain specialists. Over the past decade, I have provided training in Liaison Psychiatry, S12, and Approved Clinician courses, and I’ve presented at numerous national and international conferences on psychiatry and chronic pain. This experience has deepened my understanding of the unique intersection between physical and mental health, especially in pain management.
Joining the Asian Pain Academy is an exciting new chapter for me. It is an opportunity to share my insights with fellow professionals and to contribute to advancing pain medicine across Asia. I look forward to engaging with students and colleagues as we work together to enhance our understanding and care for patients facing chronic pain. Thank you for welcoming me into this vibrant and forward-thinking community!
